Pilates Reformer

design

Most designers of contemporary exercise equipment, at one point or another in their career, create their own interpretation of the Classical Pilates Reformer. As a design challenge, the Reformer can be seen as a study of eight basic components: a frame, track system, cross bar, shoulder pads, cart, pulley system, box, and miscellaneous hardware.

The designs below represent two contrasting values in the design process: one of affordability and the other of luxury. Each approach reflects different philosophies in balancing functionality, aesthetics, and cost.

2nd gen pilates reformer

The design of the 2nd Gen Pilates Reformer prioritizes the values of portability and affordability. The frame, cart, and crossbar are fabricated from solid red oak. This model can be assembled or disassembled for shipment or transport in under two minutes and is stackable up to ten units high. Frame dimensions: 96″ x 23″ x 3″ Weight: 64 lb”

1st gen Calf Stretcher

The 1st Gen Pilates reformer is a designer’s indulgence in over-the-top quality and luxury. The frame is available in mahogany, walnut, maple, cherry, red oak, or a hardwood finished in black lacquer. The cart, headrest, and shoulder pads are upholstered in matching leather. The straps and hardware are crafted from equestrian saddle tack. The wheels and bearings are sourced from the roller skate industry.

All the aluminum surfaces have been polished to 2000 grit, while the frame is sanded to 220 grit and finished with five coats of hand-rubbed polyurethane.
