Swivels

design

Shen Tao Swivels are the highest quality, and most aesthetically beautiful exercise equipment for Circular Movement in the world. They are as much works of art, as they are exercise apparatus. They are light weight, portable, and when used in combination with their stands and/or accessory handles, create a limitless variety of exercises.

Practitioners can use Swivels on the floor, placing their lower body in a variety of different Yoga postures. They can be placed onto stands and used with a stool at a seated level. They can also be utilized while standing. There are three interchangeable handles which can be exchanged in seconds, with the push of a quick-release button. The handle shaft is adjustable in length from 10” to 16”.

Each model has a different, unique braking mechanism to control the equipment’s degree of resistance. They are lightweight enough to be taken as luggage on an airplane or can be conveniently shipped in a 24″ x 24″ x 8″ cardboard case.

3rd gen. swivels

The Third Generation Swivels elevate exercise equipment to an Art Form. Each disc is a one of a unique masterpiece, crafted from woods such as Weeping Cherry, Walnut, Oak, (and more) and cast in black, and gold epoxy resin. Using a wood lathe, the wood/resin disc is then sanded to a mirror finish of 2000 grit, finished with hand-rubbed oil, and coated

with 2 coats of Ceramic to protect against fingerprints, and stains. The base is constructed from five 1.5-inch dowels which can easily be unscrewed for shipping, or storage. These dowels can be fabricated from either acrylic, brass, aluminum, or oak, creating a variety of different esthetics. The breaking mechanism for the Third Generation Swivels is a collet-style clamping mechanism. When disassembled, a pair of swivels can be shipped in a 19″ x 19″ x 12″ container, weighing 44 pounds.

2nd gen. swivels

The Second-Generation swivels differ from the first, and third in the design of the base, and the breaking mechanism.

Resistance is controlled through a strap and pulley system.

The base is constructed from prefabricated welded steel and finished with a black powder-coat.

The body of the Swivel is a 1.5”x18” disk, and is offered in either Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Mahogany, or Maple wood.

The edges surfaces are routed with a 3/4-inch round over.

The woodwork is sanded to 220 grits and coated with five layers of hand-rubbed polyurethane.

A pair of swivels can be stored/shipped in a 24″ x 24″ x 12″ container with a weight of 64 pounds.

1st gen. swivels

The 18” center disc serves as a canvas for artistic expression through marquetry, an intricate technique of combining various species of wood to create geometric patterns. The edges surfaces are routed with a 3/4-inch round over. The woodwork is sanded to 400 grits and coated with five layers of hand-rubbed polyurethane, then waxed to a mirror finish.

The Bases of the 1st Gen Swivels are each crafted from a single piece of either 21” Mahogany, or Maple wood. To stabilize the equipment during use, the underside of each base is coated with a 1/16-inch layer of non-slip, rubber. This 1st Gen Swivels use a braking mechanism combining a Delrin brake shoe, paired with a stainless-steel pressure plate. A pair of swivels can be stored/shipped in a 21″ x 21″ x 12″ container with a weight of 58 pounds.

swivel stand

The Swivel Stands are used, together with a stool (or bench) to perform circular movement patterns while seated. The base, and tabletop have a diameter of 24“. They are fabricated from 1” welded steel tubing with a black powder coat. The vertical fittings, and tubing utilize the same speed rail system used in the Pilates Cadillac. Swivels can be repositioned from the

floor, to the Swivel Stand in seconds. When disassembled, the components are compact enough to be shipped/stored in a box measuring 24 by 24 by 8 inches.

handles

No single piece of equipment in the Shen Tao catalog has received more hours of research and development, or love, than the Swivel Handle.

These handles are shaped to contour to one’s palm, and fingers as the handle rotates, accommodating a wide array of hand articulations.

Design inspiration was drawn from such diverse

sources as doorknobs, pepper grinders, and the endless variety of shapes, and contours the human hand makes while in motion.

Handles have been fabricated from Oak, Maple, Walnut, Mahogany, a wide variety of exotic woods, as well as many examples of marquetry.

Handles are crafted using a wood lathe, sanded to 1000 grits, then finished with 2 coats of hand-rubbed Polyx-oil and finished with 2 coats of graphite.

The base of the handles is fabricated from solid brass and features a press-in radial thrust bearing for ease of rotation.

The handle can be removed and exchanged for an alternate accessory by pressing a push-button quick-release mechanism.

Handles (with their brass base) each weigh between 2-5 lb. depending on the wood species.

Dimensions are 8”x3”x3”.

foot strap

Foot Strap handles allow the Swivels to be used with one’s legs in either a turned in, or turned out position. They are turned on a lathe, and are fabricated from Native American Hardwoods, or woods which have been joined together in a Marquetry pattern. The cylinder has been contoured to nestle comfortably against the arch of the foot.

A leather strap is integrated into the tapered cylinder to securely hold the foot in place, and a brass cap at the top ensures the leather remains firmly in position. The brass base features a press-fit thrust bearing for smooth rotation. Additionally, a Delrin, linear bearing is press-fit into the core of the cylinder to keep it centered. Foot Strap handles measure 3”x 3”x 7”, and weigh 2-3 lb.

sandals

The Sandal accessory can be used while either seated, or standing.

It incorporates the same internal bearing mechanisms found in the handle, and foot strap. The sandal consists of four components: A tapered wooden base holding a linear bearing.

An oval shaped wooden soul to support the foot.

Straps which are seamlessly imbedded into the wood, similar to the way a hiking sandal would be assembled. And a brass base holding a supporting thrust bearing. The Sandal measures 10”x 6”x 5”, and weighs 5lb.
